42 years after the legitimate attempt to recover our Islands

02/04/2024

April 2, 1982 marked a crucial point in the history of Argentina and the Falkland Islands. It was the day when our country undertook a determined effort to recover a territory that by right and justice belongs to it. 42 years after that event, it is essential to remember and reflect on the events that surrounded that legitimate attempt to recover the Malvinas Islands.

The history of the Falkland Islands is deeply rooted in Argentine national identity. Since ancient times, these territories were part of our sovereignty, being an inherent part of our history, culture and heritage. However, in 1833, the islands were occupied by British forces in an act that to this day is considered illegitimate and usurpation.

On April 2, 1982, Argentina decided to take action to reverse this situation. It was an act of legitimate defense of our sovereignty and a fair attempt to recover what belongs to us. On that day, Argentine forces landed in the Malvinas Islands, challenging the illegal British occupation and seeking to reestablish Argentine sovereignty over the archipelago.

This recovery attempt was a moment of unprecedented national unity. All Argentines were united in a feeling of support for the cause, recognizing the historical and emotional importance of the Falkland Islands for our nation. It was an act of bravery and determination that we remember with pride.

However, as we know, that recovery attempt did not end as we expected. British forces responded with war, sparking a conflict that left deep wounds on both sides. Despite the bravery and sacrifice of our soldiers, international and military circumstances led to the Argentine surrender on June 14, 1982.

42 years after that legitimate recovery attempt, it is essential to remember the importance of the Malvinas Islands for Argentina and reaffirm our commitment to the cause of sovereignty. While the war left scars, it also reminded us of the strength and unity of the Argentine people when it comes to defending what is rightfully ours.

Today, more than ever, we must continue to peacefully claim our rights to the Malvinas Islands. We must seek diplomatic and political avenues to move towards a solution that respects the interests of all parties involved, but that also recognizes historical justice and Argentina's inalienable right to this territory.

42 years after that legitimate attempt to recover our Malvinas Islands, we remember our heroes, we honor their bravery and we renew our commitment to the cause of Argentine sovereignty. The Malvinas are and will always be Argentine, and it is our duty to continue fighting for their return home.
